Use less energy
If we see the television set we all understand that it is critical to cut energy useage these days. Gas bills seem to be forever on the rise and it is therefore also financially helpful to make best use of the gas you buy. Whilst gas central heating systems have become more efficient in recent years they will typically consume up to 50% of all your gas costs. Every family should be able to reduce its heating system charges by carrying out some of the tips we have outlined below.
Check where you are using the central heating :
You can easily turn off gas central heating radiators for a period, so switch them off in any rooms that are not going to be used for a while such as a spare bedroom. You want to keep your home temperature comfortable that this doesn’t require you to heat rooms which are not going to be occupied for a number of days. Seal the room off by closing the entrance door and you will have effectively contracted your home and reduced your heating charges.
turn off a fire if you are using the boiler :
If the room needs to be warmer use thermostatically managed metal radiator valves and increase the temperature setting. With coal or wood fires most of the heat disappears up the flue, modern central heating systems are much more cost-efficient in heating your home than using an electric fire.
Eliminate draughts with insulation
If you allow chilly drafts to come into your home then you need to pay for more gas to heat this air. Use draft excluders or entrance door brushes where they can be fitted. There can be gaps between the window and entrance door frames and a wall which are easily sealed with a foam based sealer. If you live in an older home you might be stunned how often these gaps occur. drafts can be tracked down by using a wax candle flame and checking when it flickers as you move around the room taking care not to spill any hot wax.
A jumper or blanket might mean you don’t need to turn up the heating :
If you are chilled in the room put on some more clothes before you move to increase the thermostatic temperature. You may not acknowledge it but a small 1° decrease in the room temperature can save a large 10% on your heating consumption.
Make good use of your drapes :
The sun is very effective at heating your dwelling house in the wintertime, when shining, if you keep the curtains opened to allow it in. Your windowpanes can be the cause of a lot of heat loss at nighttime as external temperatures diminish. Drawing a set of heavy curtains can contract this heat loss, you can save a substantial amount of money over time with this method. Thin curtains are not as effective as thick ones at stopping this heat loss.
General advice for the rest of the home :
Check your central heating system and whether it has a hot water tank as this should be insulated. The hot water tank will hold hot water you have paid for and it is lunacy to allow this to cool down unused throughout the daylight.
Positioning metal foil at the rear of radiators could save a large sum each year.
