Shrink those energy costs
The papers are full of reasons why we should cut gas use. Ever increasing gas costs make it critical to get the most out of your heating boiler and central heating system. You may be surprised to acknowledge that up to 50% of your gas costs will be related to your gas heating system. Below we have defined some ways in which you can take simple actions two lower your present-day energy expenses.
Don’t use the boiler in places where it is not required :
You can easily turn off gas central heating radiators for a period, so switch them off in any rooms that are not going to be used for a while such as a spare sleeping room. If an area of your home is not used often it really doesn’t need heating. Also close the door to these rooms when not in use.
Don’t use the fire if you can use the central heating system :
The fire is not as efficient as the heating boiler and it will not heat the rest of your home. The presence of the chimney means that a lot of the heat generated passes to the outside, the gas central heating is much more efficient for heating than an electric fire.
Eliminate draughts with insulation
Stop being chilled air flowing into your home means that you do not have to pay for gas to continually heat the air. Pay particular care to your doors and insulate any evident gaps. Use a foam based sealer to close off any cracks between your door frame and the window frames where these meet the exterior wall. These type of cracks happen often in older houses as the foundations settle. The flame from a candle can help you to see invisible drafts as it flickers when they are present.
Ensure you are wearing warm clothing indoors :
When you feel the room is a little cold consider putting on some more clothing in preference to turning up the room thermostat. Surprisingly, a 1° decrease in the room thermostat can result in a 10% reduction in your gas use.
Make better use on your curtains to control temperature :
The sun can be used to heat your home in the wintertime by keeping curtains open on the side of the home where it is shining. With falling night-time outside temperatures your windowpanes can lose a lot of heat. This heat loss can be reduced if you close the curtains, this can can save you real money in the longer term. Thin curtains are not as effective as thick ones at preventing this heat loss.
:
You must insulate your central heating hot water tank if you have one. A cylinder which is not insulated will quickly lose its heat and cause you to pay to heat the hot water once more.
Radiators warm the wall behind them and this heat loss can be diminished if you put aluminium foil at the rear of the radiators.
