Gas Central Heating systems come in various configurations. Most of them consist of a set of heating central heating radiators, a gas boiler and copper pipework.

The most commonly used systems are pumped/vented Central Heating systems. Heating systems using the pump or vent process are equipped with a tank to allow for feeding of replacement water and expansion of heated water. Hot water from the storage tank supplies your kitchen and bath while also heating up the radiators. The tank makes way for any water expansion that is caused by the heating process. The tank is positioned at the point of maximum height, usually in the attic area to create water pressure. It not only heats the house, but also supplies hot water.
Older homes generally have pumped/vented Central Heating systems.
A sealed system is now being used in the new houses that are being built. No water tanks are needed for a Sealed system as it is a completely closed setup saving space. This unvented system eliminates water tanks and attic plumbing, thus giving a number of advantages.
- No risk of freezing pipes in the loft.
- As opposed to pumped/vented systems there is no need for maintenance work on tanks or pipes.
- The risk of leaks is decreased.
- Reduced risk of air locks, corrosion and sludge as there isn’t a chance of air being drawn down into the system through open vents as the system is sealed.
- The mains water supply can flush the sealed system if needed.
Such a Sealed Gas Central Heating System is installed with all the required gauges, controls and safeguards. The water for the system is provided directly from the main water pipe of the house. There is no hot water tank, so water is drawn directly from the main supply.
The system also has a pressure vessel which contains compressed gas, it controls the variations in pressure and a diaphragm is used to separate it from the sealed system. Pressure buildup in a Sealed system can be relieved by a safety valve which drains out water; and pressure drop is compensated by automatic fresh intake of water via another valve.
Compared to any other form of heating, Gas Central Heating systems are by far the most practical and economical. They also offer you all round control which is more than most heating systems do.
